ACCOYO ALPACAS - Why are they important?

At Pines Edge we have developed a breeding program that consistently produces superior quality suris of color utilizing Accoyo genetics. Just what does this mean and what are Accoyo alpacas and why are they important to the success of the Pines Edge suri breeding program.?

The name “ACCOYO” refers to alpacas, both huacaya and suri, that have been bred by Don Julio Barreda (1919-2006), at Estancia Accoyo, an alpaca ranch in Macasani, Peru. North American Accoyo alpacas have either been imported directly from Estancia Accoyo in Peru or are direct descendants of pure Accoyo imports. It is Don Julio Barreda who over a period of four plus decades of careful selective breeding created superior alpacas that gained world wide recognition. Don Julio maintained careful production records that documented increased fleece yield and increased average body weight as well as improved fleece characteristics. Documented records of multiple generations of consistent high quality make Accoyo genetics highly desirable and sought after. Don Julio is recognized as contributing more to the improvement of alpaca quality than any other breeder.

We have found that our full Accoyo suri herdsires, Candelwood Accoyo DaVinci and Our Accoyo Pulitzer, who represent the well respected bloodlines of Accoyo imports, Torbio, Luna, Jackpot, Inca, Bruxo and Membrillo, have the genetics to enhance the fineness, density and luster of their offspring’s fleece while maintaining uniformity of strong conformation and suri phenotype. Our deep colored herdsires, Pines Edge Wyldfyre and GLR Arappaho, are each 1/4 Accoyo and also pass important Accoyo genetics to their crias. We do not breed exclusively for full Accoyo or full Peruvian, but select each foundation suri on their merits of overall conformation and fleece character while also assessing their line’s production strengths of weaning weight, ease of breeding and birth, etc. We have been most successful carefully selecting foundation stock of diverse heritage and selectively adding Accoyo genetics.

Don Julio Barreda (1919-2006) Click for more information about Don Julio Barreda
